Ah language. What is language. Sure some people may claim that it is text or speech, the sounds and glyphs that one speaks and writes. But those are merely forms of language. It is the definition by those that observe but don't take the time to truly take in and understand what is beneath what they observe.
I once told that English is not my first language. And this is true. Even though English is the first language I learned to speak. Language lies much deeper than speech and text. It also much simpler. Language is the attempt to share information. I say attempt because everything must be transcribed into the material world and then reinterpreted. I say attempt because no form of communication can be certain to be perceived as the communicator. Language only works through agreement. The agreement on how to interpret the method of communication. In speech, the agreement on what the words of the language are defined as. My first language consisted of facial expressions and cries. And it worked well enough. Even if my parents didn't understand what it was that I needed, they understood well enough that I needed something. Those that wish to be fully understood will strive to achieve their goal in vain, the most one can ask for is to be understood well enough. The lack of being fully understood perhaps keeps us seperate entities.
Humans are silly. It is often claimed that it is easier to learn languages at a younger age. The reason perhaps is that humans as children are more impressionable. One can make them accept what is taught to them. As humans get older, they harden, become stubborn. They turn from soft earth from which they were formed and stiffen into the shapes they molded into. They begin to accept truths and grow old, they begin to refuse what they believe. They slow their learning, they begin to stop learning new truths. However, they often give form to new and impressionable forms. Humans created from dirt harden into stone and create new forms from dirt. Humans, live up to their names as people formed from the Earth. (Look up the Etymology of 'human')
Being a human isn't so bad. Unlike most animals which grow quickly into maturity and spend most of their life as an adult, humans spend an extended time learning. Though softest during the first 20 years, some humans never become that solid stone that refuses to stop learning (Though some also may become it early). Humans are variant group can not wait to become that statue and fear losing their form; others are afraid to lose their ability to mold, afraid of being unable to change.
In the past, humans were fascinated with elves and dwarves. Elves which are eternally children, pure, and innocent. Dwarves, born of the forge, born adamant. Modern fantasy does not do justice to the old folklore. 'Elves', 'Alves', shares a root with Albino. White in itself is a symbol for purity and innocence. Elves are beings of purity and innocence thus their carefree and childish ways. A stubborn Elf is a silly notion and betrays the image. Same as such is a Dwarf that is easily persuaded.
Though to be honest, there are many things that modern fantasy has distorted from folklore into a world of its own. Kobolds were simply beings that lived in mines and were not good or evil. They were just as responsible for leading miners to gold as they were to poisoning their ore. Gnomes in folklore lived in the earth and breathed the earth.
